Missile fired by Yemen's Houthi rebels strikes Israel for 1st time
A missile fired by Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi rebels struck Israel for the first time Sunday when it dropped on an uninhabited area, causing no injuries.
Air raid sirens had sounded in Tel Aviv and across central Israel moments before the missile landed at around 6:35 a.m. local time (3:35 a.m. GMT), sending residents running for shelter. Loud booms were heard, which the military said came from missile interceptors.
"Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago in central Israel, a surface-to-surface missile was identified crossing into central Israel from the east and fell in an open area. No injuries were reported," the military said.
The deputy head of the Houthi's media office, Nasruddin Amer, said in a post on X on Sunday that a Yemeni missile had reached Israel after "20 missiles failed to intercept" it, describing it as the "beginning."
In a statement on Telegram, the group said its military spokesman would soon give details about a "qualitative operation that targeted the depth of the Zionist entity."
Reuters saw smoke billowing in an open field in central Israel, though it was not immediately possible to determine if the fire was caused by the missile or interceptor debris.
Sunday's strike appears to be the first time the Houthis have penetrated deep into Israeli airspace with a missile. They have fired at Israel several times since Tel Aviv launched its genocidal war on Gaza war last October in what they describe as solidarity with the Palestinians. Most such missiles have been shot down although one hit an open area near Israel's Red Sea port of Eilat in March.
In July, a Houthi drone reached Tel Aviv, killing one man and wounding four others. That attack, the first from abroad to target Tel Aviv with a drone, prompted Israel to carry out a major airstrike on Houthi military targets near Yemen's Hodeidah port, killing six people and wounding 80.
The Israeli military also said that 40 projectiles were fired toward Israel from Lebanon on Sunday and were either intercepted or landed in open areas.
"No injuries were reported," the military said.

Sayyed al-Houthi warns enemies: 'What is coming is far greater'
Against the backdrop of Yemen's missile attack on Tel Aviv, the leader of Ansar Allah highlights today's operation and its objectives.
The leader of the Yemeni Ansar Allah movement, Sayyed Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, confirmed that today's operation, which was carried out with a high-tech missile, succeeded in bypassing all the enemy's defense systems, despite covering a distance of about 2,040 km.
Addressing the million-man marches across Yemen on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad, Sayyed al-Houthi confirmed that the operation was carried out by the Yemeni missile force using a new advanced home-grown missile, affirming that "it is part of the fifth phase of escalation [against the Israeli enemy]."
With this, the Yemeni leader rules out the operation being the response "Israel" has been anticipating for the past two months to retaliate against the Israeli aggression on Hodeidah.
"What is coming is far greater, God willing," he promised.
Meanwhile, Sayyed al-Houthi assured that the Yemeni forces shall continue their battle at sea against vessels linked with the Israeli, American, and British enemies, "conducting operations that are successful and highly effective."
He added that coordination with the different fronts of the Axis of Resistance is ongoing, vowing that the Yemeni operations will continue as long as the aggression and siege on Gaza are not ended.
"We remain steadfast on our position until Palestine is cleansed from the grip of the occupation," the Yemeni leader stated.
Sayyed al-Houthi commenced his speech by commending the high turnout, which reflects the love the Yemenis hold for the Messenger of God on the blessed day of his birth, stressing that it is "unparalleled on earth."
Addressing his people, he said, "You have held the greatest celebration on earth for the greatest and most noble human being, in appreciation of the grace, virtue, and mercy God has bestowed upon us."

Yemen preparing for extended war with 'Israel': Exclusive
Yemen is preparing for an extended war with "Israel", and is enhancing its strategic military capabilities with this long-term perspective in mind, as per Al Mayadeen's sources.
Yemeni sources told Al Mayadeen that Yemen will not limit itself to a single target, reaffirming to "Israel" that Yafa [Tel Aviv] is not secure, urging it to take the threat seriously.
The Israeli narrative regarding Yemeni military operations should not be trusted, the sources said.
The same sources told Al Mayadeen that Yemen is preparing for an extended war with "Israel" using multifaceted tactics, and is enhancing its strategic military capabilities with this long-term perspective in mind.
The sources emphasized that Tel Aviv cannot predict the timing or location of upcoming operations.
The Yemeni Army is thoroughly analyzing Israeli defense systems, similar to how it previously assessed the defenses of US vessels in the Red Sea, as per the sources, which said that Yemen has reportedly developed new technology, some of which was used in targeting US vessels that failed to intercept missiles.
Al Mayadeen's sources also noted that Yemen previously executed a precise strike with the Yafa drone, which successfully hit its target, revealing that it will now deploy new weapons against a range of strategic objectives.
In a related context, the sources further noted that "Israel" should no longer rely solely on its defense systems, as Yemen promises that future responses will involve precise, well-planned, strategic, and continuous operations, stressing that the Yemeni Army has committed to delivering on its promises and maintaining a high level of operational surprise.
Ballistic missile from Yemen hits central occupied Palestine
An IOF spokesperson reported that a ballistic missile triggered sirens across central "Israel" a short time earlier.
Simultaneously, the Israeli military stated that the ballistic missile fired at "Israel" this morning, which triggered sirens throughout central "Israel", was launched from Yemen.
The Israeli military added that the missile landed in an open area after sirens were activated from Tel Aviv to Modi’in. The military also noted that it is investigating the attempts to intercept the missile.
It is worth noting that preliminary reports indicated that the missile may have targeted an electricity facility in southeastern Tel Aviv.
Reports suggest that an initial attempt to intercept the missile may have missed its target before it entered Israeli airspace, which could account for the falling shrapnel inside "Israel".
Footage reveals damage from missile attack and interception attempt
Israeli Channel 14 military and political correspondent Hallel Bitton Rosen reported that defense systems tracked the missile for several minutes and deployed the Arrow missile system in an attempt to intercept it.
Rosen noted, "It is unclear why interception attempts were made over central Israel rather than closer to the border; the outcomes of these efforts are still under investigation."
Concurrently, Israeli media have released footage showing the missile landing in occupied Palestinian territories after the anti-air systems failed to intercept it.

Bayraktar TB3 UCAV to start tests from TCG Anadolu 'soon'
Türkiye's new unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV), Bayraktar TB3, tailored for the country's first aircraft carrier is expected to start its trials from the carrier "soon," Baykar’s chairperson of the board and CTO Selçuk Bayraktar said on Sunday.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA) in the central province of Aksaray during the Teknofest 2024 "Rocket Competition," organized by Roketsan, Bayraktar touched upon organizations of the competitions under Teknofest umbrella, saying they would continue in 11 different provinces this year.
He also recalled that this year's main Teknofest event would be held in the southern province of Adana between Oct. 2 and Oct. 6, calling on all interested to join the country's largest technology and aviation event.
Bayraktar, who stated that Türkiye's defense products are drawing attention, further said, "Our work on Bayraktar TB3 is currently ongoing. We have started the production of Türkiye's first unmanned combat aircraft Bayraktar Kızılelma, and our work to accelerate the production phase continues."
"The prototype version of Bayraktar TB3 is preparing for its first flight. Hopefully, Bayraktar TB3 will soon begin its trials at TCG Anadolu," he added.
TCG Anadolu is Türkiye's first multi-purpose LHD class amphibious assault and warship, commissioned last year.
Bayraktar earlier hinted its newest drone would likely take off from TCG Anadolu within 2024.
Earlier this year Bayraktar TB3 completed its first ski-jump test from a land-based platform and most recently, just a couple of days ago the company shared a video that depicts it completing its sixth such test.
TB3, recognized for its foldable wings, made its maiden flight in late October last year, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Türkiye.
Baykar is Türkiye's top defense exporter, constituting nearly one-third of the sector's record $5.5 billion worth of sales last year.
