29th Anniversary of Srebrenica Genocide of Bosnian Muslims
‘We must fight division, intolerance, stand up for human rights, promote mutual understanding, reconciliation,’ says UN secretary-general
Merve Berker | 11.07.2024 - Update : 11.07.2024
The leaders of both the UN and the Council of Europe on Thursday commemorated the Srebrenica genocide, which took place 29 years ago, in 1995, in eastern Bosnia.
“May the memory of Srebrenica strengthen our collective resolve to build a world free from the scourge of genocide, where justice & peace prevail,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on X.
“We must fight against division and intolerance, stand up for human rights, and promote mutual understanding and reconciliation,” he said.
Marija Pejcinovic Buric, secretary-general of the Council of Europe, said in a written statement: “Almost 30 years after the genocide in Srebrenica, this remains one of the darkest chapters in our continent’s history.”
“We think of the thousands of innocent men and boys, murdered solely because of their ethnicity and religion, and we honour their memory,” she stressed.
“The deep suffering of the families and loved ones of those killed stays with them. We pay tribute to their bravery and resilience.”
“Although this crime cannot be undone, we can learn from what happened and apply those lessons, so that such horrendous atrocities and human suffering are never repeated,” she urged.
“This means acknowledging the facts. There can be no place for denial, historical revisionism, or the glorification of convicted war criminals,” she said. “Looking to the future, we must actively embrace equality, diversity and mutual respect.”
She stressed: “We must also be clear that intolerance, hate speech and other forms of discrimination are a gateway to pain and suffering.”
“The Council of Europe will continue to stand firmly against these and to promote human rights, democracy and the rule of law as the right way forward for our societies,” she added.
Every year on July 11, newly identified victims of the 1995 genocide are buried in a memorial cemetery in Potocari in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
- Newly identified victims laid to rest
This May, with overwhelming support, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution designating July 11 Srebrenica Genocide Remembrance Day.
The resolution, spearheaded by Germany and co-sponsored by more than 40 countries, calls for July 11 to be declared "International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica."
The youngest victim to be buried this year is Beriz Mujic, 17, born in 1978 in Zvornik.
His remains were found 28 years after he was killed and were exhumed in May 2023.
He was killed in July 1995 in the Suceska area near Bratunac, and his remains were discovered and exhumed in the Srebrenica municipality area.
Mujic will be buried next to his brother Hazim, whose remains were laid to rest in 2013.
The body of their father, Omer Mujic, has yet to be found.
The oldest victim to be buried Thursday is Hamed Salic, born in 1927. He was 68 when he went missing in the summer of 1995 in the town of Zepa. His remains were exhumed in May 2014 and recently identified.
Thousands of people from various countries will attend the funerals and burials. Following this year's funeral, the number of victims buried at the cemetery will reach 6,765.
- Srebrenica genocide
In the spring of 1993, the UN Security Council declared the city of Srebrenica a "safe area." However, Serb troops led by Gen. Ratko Mladic, who was later found guilty of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, overran the zone.
Dutch troops responsible for safeguarding people in the UN zone failed to act when Serb forces occupied it on July 11, killing 2,000 men and boys in a single day.
Approximately 15,000 Bosniaks fled to the surrounding mountains, but Serb troops hunted them down, killing an additional 6,000 people.
Serb forces allowed women and children to reach Bosnian-controlled regions but massacred at least 8,372 Bosnian men in forests, factories, and warehouses. The murdered Bosnians were buried in mass graves, with bodies discovered in 570 different locations across the country, including 77 mass graves.
In 2007, the International Court of Justice in The Hague ruled that genocide had been committed in Srebrenica.
Efforts to locate the missing victims of the genocide have continued, with identified remains buried at the Potocari Memorial Cemetery in a ceremony held every year on July 11.
On June 8, 2021, UN tribunal judges upheld a life sentence for Mladic for genocide, persecution, crimes against humanity, extermination, and other war crimes committed in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

American Muslims, Commemorate 29th Anniversary Srebrenica Genocide
Washington, D.C., 7/11/2024) - The US Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO) and American Muslims solemnly observe this day of July 11 – declared by the UN as Srebrenica Massacre Remembrance Day – with our Bosnian Muslim brothers and sisters, over the 1995 preplanned, cold-blooded Serbian genocide of Srebrenica’s 8,372 defenseless, repudiated, and forsaken Bosnian boys and men by the Serbian Army of Republika Srpska Scorpions paramilitary group.
“While the UN designation of July 11th in memory of the thousands of Bosnian Muslims systematically murdered by Bosnian-Serb forces that day chose to name it as a “massacre” instead of the genocide that it was, we welcome this day as a declared memorial for the entire international community in order that it may never be forgotten or repeated,” said Oussama Jammal, USCMO’s secretary general.
“But the fact that we mark this day in the midst of yet another genocide against Muslims being perpetrated in Gaza – a genocide supported by some of the same forces that allowed for Bosnian-Serb forces to overrun UN peacekeepers allegedly protecting the UN-declared “safe area” of Srebrenica in eastern Bosnia – sounds an alarm for persecuted Muslim communities across the planet, including for the Muslims of Bosnia themselves, who again live under a growing threat of genocide,” Jammal said.
USCMO and American Muslims also welcome this international declaration of Srebrenica Massacre Remembrance Day as part of a global antitoxin against widespread and growing propagandistic efforts to contradict, twist, and water down the Srebrenica genocide as the manufacture of politicized imagination, a distortion of deaths justified as an inevitable byproduct to a civil conflict.
“Yet Bosnians as well as the American and world Muslim community will never forget that Srebrenica is a clear and scientifically confirmed genocide,” said Jammal.
After the extermination in 1995, Bosnian-Serb troops dug up some 7,000 of the remains of the boys and men they slaughtered, dismembered them, and scattered them across multiple sites in order to cover up their genocide.
This made identification of loved ones profoundly difficult, some families waiting decades to properly pray over and bury their husbands, sons, brothers, and relatives.
After 29 years of painstaking development of new DNA technology and work by the International Commission on Missing Persons, more than seven thousand Srebrenica genocide victims have been identified and most families have been able to conduct proper services and burials with at least some body parts of their murdered loved ones at Potocari Cemetery, near the genocide cite.
The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, established by the UN Security Council, along with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), investigated, tried, and in consensus passed judgment on the Serbian crimes of genocide. In 2017-18, they released the documentary モno room for denialヤ of the Srebrenica Genocide to unequivocally establish the facts of the Srebrenica genocide.
“Let it also be known that we support, as well, and wholeheartedly extol the commemoration of the Mars Mira (Peace March) that took place in Bosnia July 8th, which many do not know about,” said Jammal.
“Mars Mira is the commemoration of a death march. The procession follows the steps and story of 15,000 Bosniak men after the fall of Srebrenica,” he said.
It marks the 60-mile trek through the woods of the brave men who fought their way out of Srebrenica, rather than entrust their lives to international forces supposedly there to protect them. They fought pitched battles, and hand-to-hand, through the woods until they reached refuge at the village of Nezuk. Only 3,000 of them made it.
Therefore, on this day, we pray for the Bosnian victims of this Serbian genocide, ask God to accept them as martyrs, killed for no other reason than they were Muslims who believed in Him as One. We ask God to console the hearts of all the loved ones of these boys and men, to grant them solace and unparalleled reward in their pain and suffering, and to grant the Srebrenica victims and their families nearness to God, together, in Paradise.
War on Palestine: Western Leaders Destroying Humanity
By Mahboob A. Khawaja, PhD.
Western Leaders Forge Animosities but Seek Peace
Is NATO celebrating its 75th year of existence or averting its failure with new challenges to warn Russia, China, North Korea and Iran. Was the gathering more to watch the suitability of Biden for the presidency or recap its weaknesses to forge new animosities? NATO itself is a quagmire of contradictions and triviality in practices. There is no rational argument to converge peace in Ukraine and warmongering offers no optimism for change. NATO lacking basic principles of human equality, moral and institutional integrity, when Russia is accused of bombing the children hospitals in Kiyv and civilians hubs, it is a’ crime against humanity’ and ‘genocide.’ But when Israel bombs hospitals, places of worship and innocent civilians in Gaza, NATO and the EU do not view it as a ‘crime against humanity’ and alleged ‘genocide.’ The UNO, the ICC and the ICJ blame Israel and the US direct complicity in these crimes against humanity. The US supplies all weapons to Israel to kill innocent people and destroy Palestine. When perverted interest demands, NATO violates its mission and the limits of reason and responsibility to intervene in wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Somalia and any situation considered vital to their collective strategic interest. After nine months, millions displaced forcibly, schools and hospitals continued to be bombed, more than 37,000 innocent civilian women, children and elderly people killed by design and some 15,000 or more children and women still buried under the rubble call urgent attention of global humanity to ‘save the succeeding generations from the scourge of war’, if there is any global conscience and morality still alive and intact. The 33 leaders at NATO Washington, DC summit never fought any wars as they are just imposters to mislead their own people and the informed masses of the global community. Their presence are symbolic overtures to the US. They appear more robotic just like the stooges of Arab-Muslim leaders than normal human beings.
The AIPAC lobby offers money to the US presidential candidates to win the race. Their policies and practices in support of Israel and its wars are the same and competitive in scope. Often oil exporting Arab leaders (Saudi Arabia and the UAE) have contributed millions of dollars to the US leadership campaigns without any favor. Western leaders view them as subservient puppets - ‘camal jockeys’ and nothing else. The Arab-Muslim leaders live in dark ages, just puppets of the US. The Egyptian, Saudi, Emirates and others maintain friendly ties with Israel and have invested in Israeli technological manufacturing industries to keep Netanyahu happy and safe. PM Netanyhu is under the threat of “arrest warrant (The ICC) and the ICj alleged crimes against humanity but the US Congress, lacking any moral credibility after the 2003 Iraq war, invites Netanyahu to speak on July24 - one wonders what would a despotic figure speak about? The Israeli masses appear outraged against the continued war on Gaza. The daily civilian protests call for the resignation of PM Netyanhau and immediate ceasefire in Gaza to return the 120 hostages.
America and Israel Defy the Sanctity of Earth , its Consequences could make them Redundant
The US and Israel appear isolated and more a portrait of vices, deception and injustice to degrade humanity within the universe. They are afraid of the unknown future. The Earth is a Divine hub of human Life, Survival and a Trust, Those Bombing and Destroying it are mentally sick and defy the Divine Truth. It looks as if the US and Israeli leaders do not believe in life and death and accountability. The earth is living and spins at 1670 km per hour and orbits the Sun at 107,000 km per hour. Imagine, if this spinning fails, what consequences could occur to the living beings on Earth. Think again, about the average distance of earth from moon is 93 million miles -the distance of Moon from Earth is currently 384,821 km equivalent to 0.002572 Astronomical Units. Earth is a “trust” to mankind for its existence, sustenance of life, survival, progress and future-making. Wherever there is a trust, there is accountability. The Divine warning (Chapter 7: 56: The Quran), warns: Do no mischief on the Earth after it hath been set in order, but call on God with fear and longing in hearts; For the Mercy of God is always near to those who do good. (44:38-39), the reminder is explicit: We created not the Heavens and the Earth; And all between them merely in idle sport. We created them not, Except for just ends. But most of them do not understand.
The Divine Message (Quran:40:64),clarifies:
It is God Who made for you the Earth as a resting place and the sky as a canopy; And has given you shape and made your shapes beautiful, And has provided for your Sustenance, of things pure and good; Such is God your Lord. So Glory to God, The Lord of the Worlds.
And killing of innocent people is prohibited in the Ten Commandments (Torah):
'Thou shalt not kill' (Exod. 20:13; also Deut. 5:17). Jewish law views the shedding of innocent blood very seriously, and lists murder as one of three sins (along with idolatry and sexual immorality), that fall under the category of yehareg ve'al ya'avor - meaning "One should let himself be killed rather than violate it.
Global Peace and Security is undermined by the War of Economy and Future Appears Dark and Uncertain
To glance ahead it seems that the Western world failed to see a dreadful tragic history in the making of the end of time and loss of ingenuity to understand the consequences of naive egoism of Israeli leadership making war as an instrument of territorial expansion in the Arab Middle East. Rationally arguable conclusion to the war on Gaza was perceivable if there was a unified political-military challenge to the Israeli plans by the Arab-Muslim world. That landscape appears morally, intellectually and politically bankrupt as a scum floating on a torrent of naive puppets and discredited leaders. The American-Israeli collaborative war on Gaza and its immediate consequences made the Western world and all of its institutions shamefully redundant and void in the 21st century global norms of civility, human rights, freedom, justice and safety of civilians - whereas crimes against humanity are captured in obscure impulses and indecision and deliberate inaction by the UN Security Council. The Western news media ignored coverage of Israeli ‘genocidal’ acts against the masses in Gaza and occupied West Bank.
If Israel is not stopped, soon the leading Arab states will fly Israeli-American flags for a change. The Israeli-American denial of crimes against humnaity,”genocide” in Gaza, forcible explusion of millions clearly represent ferocious conception of rigth and worng and how irrtaional the leadership tends to be in real world affairs. Political cynicism is endemic and global leaders appear mentally and morally lost without any accountability to the informed global community seeking an end to the war and peace in the Middle East. What a shame, what a disgrace that Arab-Muslim countries have armies, resources but no responsible leadership and would not act to defend people’s freedom, rights, dignity, and sustainable future. U.S. Plan to “Expand the War Beyond Ukraine”:
NATO Buildup in Finland Puts Hostile Anti-Russia Army on Putin’s Doorstep
By Mike Whitney
The Biden administration has settled on a plan to expand the war beyond Ukraine by deploying combat troops and lethal weaponry to 15 military bases in Finland. Whether the deployment will include nuclear-armed ballistic missiles is not yet known, but the threat to Russia’s security is serious all the same. One can imagine what Washington would do if Moscow chose to build 15 fully equipped and operational military bases on the US-Mexico border. The US would swiftly eradicate the threat through force-of-arms. No one doubts this. The question is whether Putin will pursue the same course of action as the US or dillydally until the threat becomes too menacing to ignore. This is from an article at The Defense Post:
The Finnish Parliament on Monday unanimously approved a defense pact with the United States, which will allow enhanced US military presence and storage of defense material in Finland…. Aimed to strengthen Finland’s security and defense capabilities, the agreement comes after the Nordic country joined NATO in April 2023….
Finland’s relations with neighboring Russia, with whom it shares a 1,340-kilometer (830-mile) border, have become increasingly tense after Finland joined the alliance last year.
The deal gives the United States access to 15 military bases in Finland and enables the presence and training of US forces, and prepositioning of defense material in Finnish territory. It also strengthens cooperation between the two countries in crisis situations. Russia says it will respond to Finland giving U.S. access to bases, The Defense Post
Washington’s so-called “enhanced US military presence” in Finland does not serve any national interest or provide any material benefit for the American people. It is a clear provocation designed to intimidate Russia and expand the war beyond Ukraine. Not surprisingly, it replicates the same conditions that triggered the conflict in February 2022, that is, it installs NATO’s military infrastructure in locations that pose an existential threat to Russia’s survival. Russia cannot be expected to live with hostile military bases and missiles on its doorstep any more than an ordinary man can live with a gun pointed to his head. Putin must respond in order to defend his country’s national security. On Wednesday, a spokesman for Russia’s foreign ministry issued the following statement:
“I can only confirm that Russia will not leave unanswered the NATO military build-up on our border, which threatens the security of the Russian Federation,” Deputy Spokesman Andrei Nastasin said.
“We will also take the necessary measures, including of a military-technical nature, to counter aggressive decisions by Finland, as well as its NATO allies,” he added. Russian Foreign Ministry: Moscow will respond to Finland giving US access to bases, ibc.group
Clearly, the Biden administration has no interest in Finland other than using it as a forward-operating base in the West’s war on Russia. In effect, Finland’s leaders have put their country in a position where it could face the same catastrophic destruction as their neighbor Ukraine, if Moscow feels sufficiently threatened by the proposed military build-up. Here’s Putin:
“There were no problems, but now there will be, because we will now create the Leningrad military district there and definitely concentrate military units there,” Putin added in the interview …
“They (the West) took Finland and dragged it into NATO! Why, did we have any disputes with Finland? All disputes, including those of a territorial nature in the middle of the 20th Century, have all been resolved long ago,” Putin said in an interview published on Sunday. CNN
NATO’s expansion into Finland shows how the Alliance’s development has dramatically altered the security environment in Europe. In the 33 years since the dissolution of the Soviet Union (1991), Russia has never launched a war of territorial aggression against any of its neighbors. Compare that to NATO’s record of belligerence in Kosovo, Iraq, Libya and Afghanistan. The facts speak for themselves. Now NATO is continuing its inexorable march eastward despite Russia’s modest security demands or the growing threat of a third world war.
Image: Presidents Joe Biden and Sauli Niinistö in the Oval Office, 2022 (From the Public Domain)
By the way, the US routinely insists that sovereign nations (like Finland) have the right to choose whatever security arrangement they want. But that is clearly not the case. The United States and every nation in NATO have signed treaties (Istanbul in 1999, and Astana in 2010) that stipulate they cannot improve their own security at the expense of others.
Why Would US Give a War Guarantee ラ to Finland?
The principle underlying these agreements is called “the indivisibility of security”, which means that the security of one state can’t be separated from the security of the others. In practical terms, that means that signatories to these treaties are not free to develop their own military capability to the point where it poses a danger to their neighbors. These terms are especially applicable to Ukraine and Finland which seek to join a military alliance that is openly hostile to Russia. NATO membership has always been a “red line” for Putin who has stated repeatedly that he will not allow NATO bases, combat troops and missile sites to be located on his western border where they’d be less than 10 minutes flight-time to Moscow.
It’s also worth mentioning that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently boasted that the Biden administration has effectively reconstructed an Iron Curtain that prevents Russia from economically integrating with Europe, which is an arrangement that benefited the EU more than it did Russia. (For example, the cutoff of NordStream’s cheap gas has intensified Germany’s de-industrialization while delivering a blow to the economy.) Here’s Blinken:
“We now have a network of defense cooperation agreements that stretches from northern to southern Europe, from the Norwegian Sea to the Black Sea, providing security and stability for people all across the continent.’…
Sounds like an Iron Curtain to me.
Presidents Joe Biden and Sauli Niinistö in press Conference at the Presidential Palace of Finland in Helsinki, Finland in July 2023 (From the Public Domain)
The evolving story of Finland’s transformation into a launching pad for US aggression against Russia has received almost no coverage in the mainstream media, which is understandable given the media’s penchant for concealing the details of Washington’s relentless incitements. Unfortunately, the confrontation between NATO and Moscow is not going to vanish because it is not reported in the legacy media. Conditions will get progressively worse until some unexpected incident serves as the catalyst for a direct conflagration between the rival elements. What this latest fracas in Finland shows us, is that western foreign policy elites have decided to expand the conflict beyond the confines of territorial Ukraine which—in all likelihood—will plunge an even larger portion of eastern Europe into a full-blown war. Why else would they build up Finland’s military infrastructure the same way they built up Ukraine’s before the war?
Answer—Because they want the same outcome. That much seems obvious.
There’s also been scant coverage of the dramatic change in Putin’s approach to the conflict since Ukraine’s missile strike on a beach in Crimea in late June that killed four citizens including two children. The missiles that were used in that attack were US-supplied ATACMS that require US contractors, intelligence and coordinates all provided by the US military. Putin addressed the use of these missiles in a speech in May in which he said the following:
….the final target selection… can only be made by highly skilled specialists who rely on this reconnaissance data, technical reconnaissance data. … Launching other systems, such as ATACMS, for example, also relies on space reconnaissance data, targets are identified and automatically communicated to the relevant crews that may not even realise what exactly they are putting in. A crew, maybe even a Ukrainian crew, then puts in the corresponding launch mission. However, the mission is put together by representatives of NATO countries, not the Ukrainian military.
The point Putin was making was simple and can be summarized like this:
“If someone thinks it is possible to supply such weapons to a war zone to attack our territory and create problems for us, why don’t we have the right to supply weapons of the same class to regions of the world where there will be strikes on sensitive facilities of those (Western) countries?” he said. “That is, the response can be asymmetric.”
He’s right, isn’t he? Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. If you kill Russian civilians, you should expect the same treatment in response. And, if you provide long-range missiles to Russia’s enemies, Russia will do the same. That is the precedent Washington set by attacking Crimea. Putin is merely accepting the new rules of the game.
What’s interesting, however, is the way that Putin tips his hand; he candidly admits that he will not respond in the same way as Washington. Instead, his response will be “asymmetric”, which means it will be proportional but indirect. And so it has been.
In the last few weeks, Putin has deployed warships to Cuba (A Russian navy frigate and a nuclear-powered submarine) to show Washington that Russia can place nuclear-armed vessels on America’s southern border (just as Washington plans to do in Romania and Poland) He has also flown to Pyongyang where he signed a military assistance pact with North Korea which effectively terminates the US sanctions regime which is an essential tool of the “rules-based order”. And now (according to Newsweek) he is preparing to provide anti-ship ballistic cruise missiles to Yemen’s Houthis, which will scuttle Washington’s plan restore commercial traffic in the Red Sea. This is from Newsweek:
There are indications that Russian President Vladimir Putin is considering supplying the Iran-aligned Yemeni Houthi movement with anti-ship ballistic cruise missiles, Middle East Eye (MEE)—citing an unnamed senior U.S. official—reported on Saturday….
Moscow has been coordinating with the Houthis as part of its growing alignment with Iran, with the Kremlin seeking new and deeper alliances among anti-Western powers…
(Since October 7), the Houthis have been attacking commercial shipping and Western military vessels operating in the Red, Mediterranean Seas and Arabian Seas. The organization has vowed to continue and expand its attacks unless Israel fully withdraws from Gaza….
Houthi political bureau member Ali al-Qahoum said there is “a constant cooperation and development of relations between Yemen, Russia, China and BRICS states, as well as an exchange of knowledge and experience in various areas.”
“This is necessary to drown America, the U.S. and the West in [the crisis] around the Red Sea…” Putin Mulls Arming Houthis With Cruise Missiles: Report, Newsweek
Can the report in Newsweek be trusted?
We’re not sure. Having followed Putin for many years, it seems unlikely that he would throw gas on a Middle East conflict even if he thought Russia might derive some benefit from it. Even so, we do believe that the killing Russians on Russian soil has fundamentally changed the rules of the game and that we should expect Putin to pursue a number of asymmetric strategies including easing constraints on the provision of lethal weapons to allied countries. Instead of withholding these weapons in the interests of peace and security, Moscow is now prepared to provide them to allies who—like Russia—find themselves in Washington’s crosshairs.
How will Putin’s “taking off the gloves” impact growing geopolitical instability across the world?
Things are going to get much worse before they get better. The billionaire elites who dictate policy in the West are getting increasingly desperate, while Russia and China are getting increasingly fed up with Washington’s arrogant and ham-fisted meddling. Somethings gotta give. There’s bound to be a clash between the western globalists still clinging to power and the emerging Powerhouse economies of the East. The question is whether the western globalists will “go gentle into that good night” or incinerate much of the planet in one last desperate bid for power. Here’s Putin:
…the self-centeredness and arrogance of Western countries have led us to a highly perilous situation today. We are inching dangerously close to a point of no return. Calls for a strategic defeat of Russia, which possesses the largest arsenals of nuclear weapons, demonstrate the extreme recklessness of Western politicians. They either fail to comprehend the magnitude of the threat they are creating or are simply consumed by their notion of invincibility and exceptionalism. Both scenarios can result in tragedy.
It is evident that the entire system of Euro-Atlantic security is crumbling before our eyes. At present, it is practically non-existent and must be rebuilt. To achieve this, we must collaborate with interested countries, of which there are many, to develop our own strategies for ensuring security in Eurasia and then present them for broader international deliberation….
the never-ending attempts by the current globalist liberal elites …. to maintain their imperial status and dominance in one way or another, are …. clearly contrary to the genuine interests of the American people. If it were not for this dead-end policy…. international relations would have long been stabilized... President of Russia Vladimir Putinメs speech at the meeting with senior staff of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Moscow, June 14, 2024
Putin knows that it’s not the American people who want these bloody interventions, but the “globalist liberal elites” (as he calls them) who want to strengthen their grip on power whatever the cost. This is the rogue element that must be eradicated so that ordinary people can regain control of their government and nuclear war can be averted. It’s a formidable task, but it must be done.*

Pakistan Cricket Getting Wayward
By Syed Rifaqat Ali
After Pakistan's shabby performance in the recently-concluded International Cricket Council T20 World Cup in America-West Indies, there is a slew of debates In TV channels on the selection of the team under Babar Azam.
Pakistan's foreign coach Gary Kirsten cried hoarse when he proclaimed "Babar Azam lacks leadership qualities and should be replaced." Commenting on the performance of the team in T20 World Cup, Inzemam ul Haq said in a TV panel discussion that the selection of players for T20 World Cup was bizarre.
He asked: Azam Khan, who was part of the team, was a poor selection, and I do not know how the selectors had picked him in the team when he averaged just eight runs in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.
Azam Khan's selection only shows that the selectors succumbed to pressure from his father Moin Khan, former Pakistan keeper. From no angle Azam Khan looks a cricketer.
He is totally overweight, looks like a wrestler and is bereft of technique. He is not even fit for a school team, and yet the selectors turned a blind eye towards his shortcomings and inducted him in the team.
It reflects sorely on the selectors and smacks of corrupt practice. When Franz Cronje, brother of the late Hansie Cronje, captain of South Africa team, was in India as Manager of the South Africa Under-19 team, I asked him: what are the attributes a player should have to be selected in South Africa team, he replied: you may be however good in batting and bowling, but if you are not excellent in fielding, you will not find a place in the team.
The Springboks lay so much emphasis on fielding. On the contrary, Pakistan hardly takes into account the fielding aspect. Pakistan lost many International matches just due to poor catching and fielding. Amazingly, before the t20 World Cup, the Pakistan team was entrusted to Army for physical fitness training.
It was a foolish idea which boomeranged. Army training for cricketers for physical fitness is unheard of. Who suggested this stupid idea is clandestine and should be pulled up to doing harm to Pakistan Cricket Team. If Pakistan wants to put up a formidable side in International matches, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will have to be more serious and circumspect.
The management, selection committee and dedication should be the hallmark to stem the rot. Pakistan has abundant talent, but a casual approach has ruined the team. Much emphasis should be given on unearthing talented players in universities for long-term grooming.
The PCB seems to be non-serious in promoting cricket in Pakistan. Is it not astonishing that Karachi with a population of over a crore people, does not have a national cricket Academy. And PCB is not bothered about it. Its Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who holds a ministerial post, has taken things casually. If he thinks, overhauling the team and selection committee will pay rich dividends, he is highly mistaken.
He aught to be humble enough to reach out to Pakistan's legendary playersin order to utilise their services and counselling for the good of Pakistan Cricket Team. Lastly, Babar Azam is the man who should be firmly placed in the saddle as skipper, and any tinkering with the idea will be deplorable. He is unquestionably man of the moment and should continue as captain.
